An Interaction? A Sabbatical? An Album?

In September 2011, Australian soul singer/songwriter Ray Mann relocated to Berlin and began recording and releasing his new album Sketches, online, one track at a time. Instead of disappearing for 12 months and then resurfacing with a finished album, Ray is completing each song – and its accompanying video – online, month-to-month, with audience participation. 12 songs, 12 months.

In a time of huge transition in the music industry, Ray has decided to make the most of the fact that artists and audiences are experimenting with how they create and consume music, how they interact online and how multimedia affects and can influence this. The themes of ‘Change’ and ‘Reinvention’ are core to The Sketches Project: a framework in which Ray is not only creating and releasing his new music, but rethinking the way he does it – literally in front of his audience.

Sketches Volume 1

Bar the exception of run of 200 x limited edition promotional copies, Sketches vol. 1 is a digital-only EP that collects the first three tracks from this innovative, ongoing project. Namely, Showya (- a simple, seductive slow-jam that nods to Curtis Mayfield and The Tempations, Babylon – a stripped-back, deconstructed rhythm section propels this song forward in fits and starts – we may not speak the same language anymore, but we can still dance (Right?) and Who’s Loving You, a rowdy garage-soul protest song for the broken-hearted.

The next 3 songs recorded will be released as Sketches Volume # 2 early next year, Sketches Volume # 3 will follow mid next year – and so forth.

More on Sketches in just a moment but a quick recap of events that led to the move to Berlin.

Ray formed The Ray Mann Three in 2008 after leaving Kid Confucius, the Sydney 8 piece he played lead guitar in with his cousin, rhythm guitarist Andrew Guirguis. A minimal soul band, The Ray Mann Three had always been a tricky prospect in Australia’s rock-dominated market but through word-of-mouth, an independently released self-titled debut album and an amazing live show, the band generated a very loyal following. Supporting everyone from Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings to Jamie Lidell, Ash Grunwald and Kate Miller-Heidke, they began selling out shows off their own back – including a performance at Sydney’s The Basement that was recorded for ABC TV’s ‘Live At The Basement’ and has aired repeatedly.

In late 2010, following back-to-back national tours supporting Tori Amos and Al Green, and touring to thousands in Japan off the back of his debut album being released over there, Raymond Wassef returned to Australia to find The Ray Mann Three – and possibly everything he’d built with it – falling apart. Bass player Byron Luiters had been snapped up by The John Butler Trio; drummer Grant Gerathy had chased his heart up the coast; and amid turbulence in his own personal life Ray had also split from his management.

With no band and no idea of the way forward, he recorded some song ideas and in June 2011, packed those recordings in a bag with a week’s worth of clothes and moved to Berlin, where he hit the ground running. Only 3 days in the country he shot a video clip in his hostel and began gigging regularly at festivals and art exhibitions. He also exhibited his own art in a solo gallery show – all this before he’d even secured his visa.

Sketches – From Conception to Completion

When Ray moved to Berlin, he also moved onto the internet. Using the theme of change, with input from the audience via Ray-Mann.com, Facebook and Twitter, Ray is single-handedly crafting each song and its accompanying music video from rough demo to finished product via live updates. Each month I pose a new question about ‘Change‘. I post my initial, raw musical + visual response (my ‘Sketch’), and then develop it into a finished song + video by the end of that month. You can watch each new song + video evolve over the course of each month – or you can join in.

1. New Song + Video Every Month – Free.
Each ‘Sketch’ is audio AND visual. On day Three of each month, a new song by The Ray Mann Three will be released on Vimeo, streaming for free. The accompanying video might be anything: a drawing, a photograph, who knows? Both audio and visual will be a work-in-progress, and will change throughout that month – a “sketch” being developed.

2. My Ideas + Ray’s Music = Sketches
Got an idea for how the song should look? Send me a sketch of your own: a visual response to each song, and I’ll use it as the “video” for that song – remember, it doesn’t need to be a video; any visual thing that can be emailed or uploaded. Or, if you’re more audio-inclined, you can remix the song – “sketch” music of your own using elements of mine (stems will be available for download once each song is ‘completed’).

3. What are these Sketches about?
Each song + video is a different idea about or response to Change, and each song will be accompanied by a question about change (eg. “What’s something you can do now that you couldn’t do 5 years ago?”) – and your response can be something visual or musical. Anything goes.

ps. Sketches is not an Album
… but it might be one day. In the meantime, it’s an experiment in releasing music, making art, and connection between me and you. I’ll be working this out as I go along, and I hope to work this out with you – like a Q & A where we both suggest answers.

When BIG DAY OUT was born 20 years ago, a new wave of music was emerging from the American north-west. At the crest of that wave was one of the most incendiary heavy rock bands of our time: SOUNDGARDEN. It’s been fifteen years since they last graced our shores and the first time since 1997 that SOUNDGARDEN will perform outside of the USA! Chris Cornell, Kim Thayil, Matt Cameron and Ben Shepherd – the Seattle foursome known as SOUNDGARDEN – have chosen the BIG DAY OUT to mark their triumphant return to the international stage and we are thrilled to welcome them back.

SOUNDGARDEN first hit the US Top 40 with their third album, 1991’s Badmotorfinger. In 1994, they played their first BIG DAY OUT – two months later, their biggest success, Superunknown, would be unleashed.

Home to Spoonman, Black Hole Sun and Fell on Black Days, Superunknown hit No.1 in Australia and New Zealand, won two Grammys, sold five million copies in the US, and earned a place among the greatest albums of the ’90s. In 1997, SOUNDGARDEN returned for their second BIG DAY OUT on the back of their fifth album, Down on the Upside, home to Burden in My Hands, Blow Up the Outside World and Pretty Noose.

In their dozen years apart, Chris Cornell joined members of Rage Against the Machine to form Audioslave and released three solo albums, while Matt Cameron became drummer for fellow Seattle heroes Pearl Jam.

In 2010, Cornell took to Twitter to speak directly to SOUNDGARDEN loyalists the world over, “Knights of the Soundtable ride again!” he tweeted. Fans across the world stood to attention as the band’s website launched again after the 12 year hiatus. A secret show in Seattle soon followed, as did a headlining spot at Chicago’s Lollapalooza, a retrospective titled Telephantasm and the band’s first live record titled Live on I-5. SOUNDGARDEN toured in the US this past northern summer for the first time since 1997.

SOUNDGARDEN are “truly brutal and inventive” said The Los Angeles Times of their show earlier this year at LA’s The Forum. “Cornell and band attacked opposite poles of rock music – the sex-god wail and drone-based jams of Led Zeppelin and the black-tar scrim of peers like The Melvins – and made something new from both.”

“It’s been too long as far as I’m concerned,” Chris Cornell told The Advertiser of the band’s return to Australia. We couldn’t agree more. For those who were there the first time, and for those who only know the legend, BIG DAY OUT presents the one, the only, SOUNDGARDEN.

SOUNDGARDEN will be joined on these side shows by very special guests, THE BRONX. This L.A quintet churn out raw riffs and piercing hooks, the band channels their kinetic live energy through razor sharp wit and unbridled aggression. No sombreros or alter egos here just the straight up power of THE BRONX.

These are the ONLY AUSTRALIAN SOUNDGARDEN shows outside of the Big Day Out 2012 dates.

The Grates’ Summer’s Breath Tour 2011

is currently taking place and the band are excited to announce a whole bunch of comrades who will be joining them and Last Dinosaurs on the nation-wide run. To help shake the New York chills and warm the stage they’ve dared Dune Rats to take the stage in Toowoomba and Brisbane and Melbourne’s Loon Lake to help them on Melbourne Cup Eve at The Hi-Fi. Also on board are rockers Them 9’s in Ballarat and The Infants in Geelong. Adelaide’s 20^th Century Graduate will rival Patience with their energy in their hometown, whilst Sydney’s Guineafowl will be making a special trip to Perth along with noise-pop project Gunns. Dragging Pianos will be there for the finale, exhaling their hushed acoustics in Townsville and Cairns.

North Queensland’s The Medics will be making more then one appearance, jumping on the Summer’s Breath bus at Wollongong and seeing the tour through. Those who have witnessed The Medics will attest; they are one hell of a live show, with first single ‘Beggars’ earning them a Queensland Music Award and garning some serious Triple J airplay. The Medics will be looking to play a few tunes earmarked for their album, due out in early 2012. They will be ripping up the stage and showing the crowd exactly what’s what in the final leg of the tour, taking in Newcastle, Sydney, Byron Bay, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Townsville and Cairns.
